CHARLESTON, S.C. — App State used a big sixth-inning rally to force extra innings, but UConn's run in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Huskies a 7-6 victory as the Mountaineers wrapped up their appearance at the Cougar Classic.
App State (7-5) trailed 5-1 with two away in the sixth before
Emma Jones cleared the bases with a three-run triple to score
Mary Pierce Barnes, pinch-runner
Abby Cunningham and
Addie Wray. Jones then scored the tying run when
Emily Parrott reached base on an infield error.
In extra innings, each team starts the frame with a runner on second base, and App State took its first lead on Parrott's eighth-inning single to score pinch-runner
Kati Waalk. UConn (8-6) responded with its own run thanks to a sac bunt/sac fly combo.
The Mountaineers were unable to score in the top of the ninth, and a sac bunt set up a game-ending single for the Huskies.
App State returns to action Tuesday with a 3 p.m. game at USC Upstate.
Kayt Houston (2-for-4, double) and Wray (2-for-4, run) helped the Mountaineers total eight hits. Four App State pitchers officially allowed one earned run, as starter
Kaylie Northrop allowed one run in the opening two innings.
Sejal Neas pitched the next 2.2 innings, and
Kenzi Lyall officially allowed no runs in two innings of relief.
Delani Buckner recorded the final out of the seventh inning to push the game into extras.
