WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – App State field hockey fell 5-1 to No. 11 Wake Forest n Saturday's game at Kentner Stadium.
The Mountaineers struck first to take a 1-0 advantage in the fourth minute of the contest. Junior midfielder Pauline Mangold scored a goal off of a penalty corner in the first period, and App State struggled to stay on offense after that. The shot was assisted by senior midfielder Friederike Stegen.
Stegen made her season debut today after missing App State's first two games. Head coach Meghan Dawson noted that Stegen is very skillful and creates a lot of opportunities for her teammates.
Wake Forest had goals from Abby Carpenter, Elisha Evans and Hannah Maxwell, who scored three times.
App State keeper Addie Clark had three saves, and the Mountaineer defense limited Georgetown to just eight shots on goal.
The Mountaineers return to action with their home opener at 6 p.m. against James Madison on Friday. App State will then head to Charlotte on Sunday to play a neutral-site game against Ohio State at 1 p.m.
