Women’s Soccer Records Draw at Winthrop

Rock Hill. S.C. - App State women's soccer recorded a 2-2 draw in overtime against Winthrop Wednesday evening in Rock Hill, S.C. for its road opener.

App State moves to 1-0-1 on the young season while Winthrop is now 1-0-1. 

The Mountaineers got on the board when Carly Lantz found the top-right corner of the net for her first collegiate goal in the 25th minute of the first period, while Kirsten Seeley earned the assist. 

App State dominated ball possession in the second period, battling for the lead, after Winthrop's Valentina Mosquera equalized the contest 1-1 in the 10th minute. Breckyn Monteith tallied her first goal for the Black and Gold, unassisted, in the 65th minute of the contest to break the 1-1 tie. 

The Mountaineers kept the 2-1 advantage until the last minute of the contest when Winthrop scored on a free kick to send the match into overtime. 

App State had a pair of opportunities in the second overtime when Monteith fired off attempts to give the Apps the win, but Winthrop's Izzy Giarrizzi stopped both shots. 

"They definitely weren't satisfied tonight and that's something that I'm glad of," said head coach Sarah Strickland. "I'm glad they weren't satisfied with a tie and that it's a we're going to do better, and we're going to get more out of the next one."

Kerry Eagleston tallied two saves, making her one save away from tying Megan Roberson (2012-15) for sixth all-time in program history. 

App State is now 3-2-2 against the Eagles in the all-time series, including a combined score of 12-8 in the series. 

The Black and Gold outshot Winthrop, 13-9, with six shot attempts being on goal. App State also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

App State returns to action on Sunday against USC Upstate at 6 p.m. at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. The home match against the Spartans will be streamed on ESPN+
