BOONE, N.C. – App State volleyball head coach
Matt Ginipro has announced that Allison Mayfield has been named assistant coach for the program.
Mayfield comes to the High Country after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Texas A&M. She helped the Aggies post a 9-9 record during the 2020-21 volleyball season. Mayfield worked alongside Texas A&M head Coach Laura "Bird" Kuhn and associate head coach Kolby O'Donnell, both of whom worked as assistants at App State under Ginipro. Kuhn was an assistant for the Mountaineers during the 2007 season and O'Donnell was associate head coach and recruiting coordinator from 2008-12.
"I was fortunate to have a great applicant pool for both assistant coach openings and Allison immediately rose to the top of that list," said Ginipro. "Her playing experience at Kansas, and in Europe, was something our players really connected with when she spoke to them during the interview. That experience will be a huge bonus for us in the gym."
Mayfield was a four-year standout at Kansas, leading the team during her sophomore season in kills per set, averaging 3.65. She was named All-Big 12 during her senior season, after posting 462 kills (second most in single season program history). Mayfield currently ranks sixth all-time in Jayhawk program history with 1,282 kills.
"I am incredibly excited to begin this new chapter with the volleyball program at App State," said Mayfield. "I have heard nothing but great things about Matt, and know he has a glowing track record of mentoring and producing successful Division I coaches, so I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity. I hope that the knowledge I have acquired from my many years of playing experience can add value to the team. I cannot wait to jump in and do my best to make a positive impact on the program."
After graduation, Mayfield played professionally overseas in France, Switzerland, Finland, Peru, Greece and Hungary. She won titles in Peru in 2018 with CV Universidad de San Martin Porres and in 2019 in Hungary with Fatum Nyiregyhaza.
"A bonus for me, specifically, is that she has spent time working for two of my former Assistant Coaches, Bird Kuhn and Kolby O'Donnell," added Ginipro. "They know, firsthand, how the program here runs and the type of person I like to be around so their recommendation meant a lot to me. I'm looking forward to getting Allison to Boone so we can get the full staff up and running for preseason."
