Field Hockey Drops Back-and-Forth Affair At Kent State, 3-2

Story Links

KENT, Ohio - App State field hockey dropped a back-and-forth affair 3-2 at Kent State Friday.

App State struck first Friday courtesy of a Meghan Smart goal with 11:47 left to play in the second quarter. The Mountaineers have now scored first in six of seven contests this spring season.

The Mountaineers retained a 1-0 advantage heading into break, but a total of four goals would be scored in the third.

Kent State answered early in the third quarter to knot the game at one apiece. Smart then put the Black and Gold back out in front, 2-1, with her second goal of the day, fifth of the season, just four minutes remaining the quarter.

The Golden Flashes answered yet again by adding two quick goals from Katie Wuerstle to take a 3-2 lead heading into the final period.

App State recorded two shots in the fourth in a chance to tie, but failed to find the back of the cage. Kent State outshot App State 13-5 Friday as eight of the Golden Flashes' 13 shot attempts occurred during their third-quarter offensive explosion.

Five shots on the day marked an offensive season low for the Mountaineers. Addie Clark earned the start in goal and recorded three saves.

The Mountaineers fell to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in Mid-American Conference play.

Game two of the conference road series at Kent State is scheduled for Saturday at noon from Murphy-Mellis Field.
