CONWAY, S.C. -- App State volleyball dropped a 3-1 (25-11, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22) decision at Coastal Carolina in its regular season finale on Sunday afternoon.
McCall Denny paced the Mountaineers (7-21, 3-13) with a team-best 11 kills.
Victoria Wilform added nine kills on a .333 hitting percentage,
Anna Kincaid finished with seven kills on a .400 hitting mark and
Daryn Armstrong tallied six kills on a .400 hitting percentage.
Sam Bickley finished with 21 assists and seven digs.
Emma Reilly finished in double figure digs with a team leading 15.
Coastal Carolina (18-8, 12-4 SBC) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and never trailed, taking the opening frame 25-11.
A kill from Denny in the second gave the Mountaineers a 10-6 edge. Coastal Carolina chipped away and tied the score at 19-19, before kills from
Lulu Ambrose and Reilly gave App State the 21-19 lead. Following a Chanticleer point, App State scored three straight points, capped by a block solo from Kincaid. A Chanticleer attack error a few points later gave the Black and Gold the second set, 25-22.
The Mountaineers score three consecutive points early on to tie the score at 4-4. Coastal Carolina responded with a 12-4 run to open a 16-8 advantage. Trailing 20-12, the Mountaineers won four straight points, capped by back-to-back service aces from
Sophie Cain. From there, the Chanticleers won five of the next six points to clinch the set and take a 2-1 lead.
Set 4 saw the Chanticleers take control early. Trailing 19-14, App State scored three straight points to pull within two at 19-17. Trailing 22-18, the Mountaineers got a pair kills from Kincaid in a 4-0 run to knot the score at 22-22. From there, Coastal Carolina won the next three points to clinch the set and match.
App State will now shift its focus to the Sun Belt Tournament, which begins Thursday in Foley, Ala.
