Women's Basketball Drops Weekend Final to Troy

BOONE, N.C. - App State women's basketball fell to Troy in the weekend finale, 74-52, on Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Center.

App State is now 8-8 and 5-5 in league play and Troy improved to 11-4 and 7-1 in conference action.

Janay Sanders scored a game and season-high 15 points while going a 9-of-9 from the free-throw line and grabbed a season-high four rebounds. Lainey Gosnell was the other Mountaineer in double figures with 13 points and pulled down six rebounds. Maya Calder led the team with a season-best seven off the glass.

Troy scored the first five points of the contest before App State responded by going on a 9-3 run that gave the Mountaineers the lead, 9-8. Gosnell highlighted the spurt with five points, including the trifecta that capped off the surge. Neither team held the lead by more than five points in the opening period. The Trojans scored five straight to end the frame, taking an 18-13 lead going into the second period.

Much like Friday, the visitors used the second quarter to take control of the contest by starting the period on a 10-0 run and holding App scoreless for the first 4:54 of the quarter. The scoring surge gave Troy a commanding lead the rest of the way for the victory.

Troy once again took advantage of App State's miscues, scoring 23 points off 21 turnovers. App State forced 17 but only scored 12 off Troy's mistakes.

Alexus Dye and Tiyah Johnson each led the team with 14 points. Dye posted 20 rebounds for a double-double.

App State aims to bounce back next weekend when it hosts Georgia State on Friday and Saturday.
