Men's Basketball Falls to Coastal Carolina

BOONE, N.C. -- App State men's basketball trimmed a 19-point second half deficit to four, but fell 84-77 to Coastal Carolina on Saturday evening.

The Chanticleers (15-15, 8-11 SBC) opened a 73-54 lead with just over four minutes left in the contest. From there, the Mountaineers (16-14, 10-9 SBC) outscored the Chanticleers 24-7 over a span of just over 3:30 to pull within 80-76 with 28 seconds remaining. Coastal Carolina pushed its lead back to six points with 22 seconds left on a pair of free throws. The Black and Gold pulled within five points in the final seconds, but could get no closer.

In the first half, the Mountaineers broke an early 5-5 tie with four consecutive points. Coastal Carolina responded with a 9-0 spurt to take a 14-9 lead, but App State came right back with seven straight points to take a 16-14 edge. The Chanticleers regained the lead and built a 26-21 advantage, before the Black and Gold tied the score at 26-26 on a pair of free throws from Kendall Lewis. App State took a 32-31 lead late in the opening half, but Coastal Carolina scored six of the last seven points to take a 36-33 lead into the intermission.

The trio of Mountaineer seniors all reached double figures in scoring on Senior Day. O'Showen Williams reached double figures for the eighth straight game with a team-high 19 points. Isaac Johnson added his team leading seventh double-double of the season with 17 points, a game-high tying 12 rebounds and three assists. Hunter Seacat added his second double-double of the season with a season-high tying 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Justin Forrest also reached double figures with 11 points and Lewis finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

App State pulled down 36 rebounds in the contest, including 15 on the offensive glass. The 15 offensive rebounds for the Mountaineers rank as the third most in a game this season.

DeVante' Jones pace Coastal Carolina with game highs of 26 points and nine assists. Tyrell Gumbs-Frater hit five three-pointers off the bench to finish with 17 points.

The Mountaineers will conclude the regular season on Tuesday evening at ULM at 8 p.m. EST.
