Mountaineers Cruise Past Greensboro College 87-47

BOONE, N.C. -- Donovan Gregory tallied a career high 18 points as App State men's basketball recorded an 87-47 win over Greensboro College on Thursday evening.

The win pushes App State's record to 5-2 on the season and clinches a winning record in non-conference play. Paired with a 6-5 mark in non-conference action last season, the Mountaineers have now posted back-to-back non-conference winning records for the first time since the 1998-99 season (6-4) and 1999-00 campaign (6-4).

Gregory finished an efficient 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from the field and 8-of-9 (88.9 percent) from the free throw line. He added a career high tying five assists and a block. Gregory has now reached double figures in scoring in five games this season.

In his first game of the season, Deshon Parker tallied 12 points, five rebounds and a team best three steals. Adrian Delph reached double figures with 12 points and a season high seven rebounds. RJ Duhart added nine points and five rebounds off the bench, while James Lewis Jr. recorded a team high eight rebounds and a pair of steals.

App State broke an early 2-2 tie with a 9-3 spurt to take an 11-5 edge. Leading 22-17, the Black and Gold used a 12-3 run to extend its lead to 34-20. The Mountaineers closed the opening half on a 12-2 run and took a 46-25 edge into the break.

In the second half, the Mountaineers limited the Pride (1-4) to just two points over the first 9:45 and pushed its lead to 63-27. App State opened a lead as large as 44 points in the second half, en route to the victory.

The Black and Gold held a 51-29 edge in rebounding, including a 20-7 advantage on the offensive glass. In addition, the Mountaineers held a 38-10 edge in points in the paint and a 19-0 advantage in second chance points.

The App State defense continued its strong performance in the early going of the season, limiting Greensboro to 25.5 percent (13-of-51 percent) shooting, including a 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) clip in the second half.

The Mountaineers have a quick turnaround and will host Columbia International on Friday at 4 p.m. on ESPN+ and the Appalachian Sports Network from Learfield IMG College. App State men's basketball would like to thank the Law Offices of Timothy Welborn as its 2020-21 season sponsor.
