Men's Basketball Set for Friday Road Tilt at Charlotte on ESPNU

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- App State men's basketball will hit the road for the first time in over three weeks on Friday, traveling to take on Charlotte. Tip is set for 5 p.m. on ESPNU and the Appalachian Sports Network from Learfield IMG College.

THE SERIES
  • This will be the 38th meeting between the two schools with Charlotte leading 23-14
  • App State won last season's meeting in Boone 64-55, while the 49ers won the last meeting in Charlotte 80-72 during the 2016-17 season.
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Mountaineers recorded an 81-57 victory over N.C. Wesleyan on Sunday/
  • CJ Huntley had a career-high 18 points on 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) shooting from the field and 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) shooting on 3-pointers. He added three rebounds. Kendall Lewis added a season-best 17 points, while adding six rebounds and three steals off the bench. Donovan Gregory added a career-high tying 14 points and four rebounds, while Adrian Delph tallied 10 points and a team-high tying four assists.
  • After N.C. Wesleyan jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, the Mountaineers (3-1) responded with eight straight points to take an 8-4 lead. The Black and Gold broke a 25-25 tie with five straight points, getting a trey from Justin Forrest and a pair of free throws from Lewis. Leading 32-30, the Mountaineers closed the half on a 10-2 spurt to take a 42-32 lead into the half. In the second half, the Black and Gold went on a 6-0 run to open a 50-34 edge with 17:20 remaining. The Battling Bishops trimmed the Mountaineer lead top 50-39, but App State came right back with a 9-1 run to extend its lead to 59-40. App State pushed its lead to as large of 26 points en route to the 81-57 victory.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • After its win on Sunday, the Mountaineers stand at 3-1 on the season.
  • Three Mountaineers are averaging double figures in scoring in Delph (11.8 ppg), Gregory (11.5 ppg) and Lewis (11.0 ppg).
  • Through its first four game, the Mountaineers have had four different leading scorers in Donovan Gregory (14 at South Carolina State), James Lewis Jr. (12 versus Caver), Michael Almonacy (21 versus Bowling Green) and Huntley (18 versus N.C. Wesleyan).
  • A total of five Mountaineers are averaging 4.0 rebounds or better in Almonacy (5.3), Sasha Glushkov (5.3), Lewis (5.0), Lewis Jr. (4.8) and Huntley (4.0).

SCOUTING THE 49ERS
  • Charlotte recorded its first win (1-2) of the season by a 78-40 score over South Carolina State on Monday.
  • Five 49ers reached double figures in Brice Williams (14), Jahmir Young (12), Jackson Threadgill (11), Jhery Matos (10) and Jordan Shepherd (10).
  • Young leads the team in scoring (14.0 ppg), rebounding (6.0 rpg) and ranks second in assists (10).
  • As a team, the 49ers are averaging 5.3 blocks, which sits second in Conference USA and holding opponents to 38.2 percent shooting, which ranks third.
