BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University field hockey (6-3, 0-2 MAC) suffered a 2-0 defeat to Miami on Friday afternoon at Brandon and Erica M. Adcock Field. 
Senior goalkeeper 
Rachel Gaines made three saves in the first period to blank the RedHawks (5-4, 2-0 MAC) through the first 15 minutes of action. After a goal early in the second period, the Mountaineers increased their pressure on Miami's backfield, firing a pair of shots to close out the half. Freshman 
Sarah Farrell delivered App State's best opportunity of the afternoon with seconds left in the first half, drilling a close-range shot from the right side off the Miami goalkeeper's left glove. 
Miami recorded the only two shots of the third period before Leonor Berlie registered the RedHawks' second goal early in the final period. Berlie's strike off a penalty corner in the 47
th minute was Miami's fifth and final penalty corner of the afternoon. App State earned a penalty corner of its own less than five minutes later, but senior 
Michelle Taylor's shot was turned aside.
The Mountaineers finished with five shots, four of which were on goal. Junior 
Veerle Van Heertum led the Mountaineers with two shots and two shots on goal. 
Gaines finished with seven saves, boosting her season total to 52 stops.
Appalachian returns to action on Sunday to close out its longest home stand of the season against La Salle (3-4). Sunday's contest is set to start at noon.
