COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Appalachian State volleyball dropped its non-conference finale to Maryland by a 3-0 score on a neutral court in Columbia, S.C. on Saturday evening.
Grace Morrison paced the Mountaineers (4-9) with seven kills, while
Kara Spicer and
Emma Longley added five apiece.Â
Sam Bickley dished out 21 digs to go along with a pair of kills. On defense,
Emma Reilly and Bickley each had five digs, with
McCall Denny and Longley finishing with four apiece.
App State used a 5-0 run midway through the opening set to open a 16-13 lead. With the Black and Gold leading 17-14, the Terrapins (8-4) used a 4-0 run to grab the lead. Maryland pushed its lead to as large as four points and captured the first stanza 25-22.
In the second set, Maryland used a 7-0 run to break a 5-5 tie and take a 12-5 lead. Trailing 14-6, the Mountaineers captured six straight points to trim their deficit to 14-12. App State pulled within a point at 17-16, before four consecutive Terrapin points pushed their lead back to 21-16. Maryland went on to win the set 25-19 to take a 2-0 edge.
A service ace from Spicer tied the score at 6-6 in the third set. From there, Maryland won five of the next six points to open an 11-7 advantage. App State pulled within two points at 12-10, before five straight Maryland points gave them a 17-10 lead. The Terrapins completed the sweep by winning the set 25-18.
Rebekah Rath paced Maryland with a match-high 10 kills. Erika Pritchard and Emma Schriner each added eight kills.
The Mountaineers will now shift their focus to Sun Belt play, which begins on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Georgia State in the Holmes Center. The Mountaineers also welcome Georgia Southern to the High Country on Sept. 29 for a 12:30 p.m. match. Both contests can be seen on ESPN+.
