BOONE, N.C. – Junior 
Meghan Smart's two goals propelled Appalachian State University field hockey to a 3-0 victory over Davidson in Sunday's preseason opener at Brandon and Erica M. Adcock Field. 
Smart registered the Mountaineers' first goal with less than five minutes remaining in the first quarter to give App State a 1-0 halftime advantage. The junior then doubled her tally in the contest's final period to extend Appalachian's lead.
Less than two minutes after Smart secured a brace, sophomore 
Anna Smarrelli recorded App State's final goal of regulation on a breakaway opportunity. The Black and Gold outshot the Wildcats 15-2 in regulation while also holding an 11-0 advantage in penalty corners.
The Wildcats and Mountaineers then played a simulated overtime period, where freshman 
Madison Miles slotted home the golden goal. The two teams also practiced a penalty shootout with App State defeating Davidson 2-1 after five attempts each.
The Mountaineers close out their preseason schedule on Saturday at Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. The game is set to begin at 11 a.m.
