TROY, Ala. - Appalachian State (29-16, 12-8 SBC) defeated Troy (34-14, 16-6 SBC) in the series finale on Saturday. The Mountaineers took down the Trojans 2-1 in game three after dropping the first two games in a doubleheader on Friday.
With the win, the Mountaineers match the 2006 season win total with 29. It is the most wins since 2013 and second most in program history for App State.
The game remained scoreless through three and a half innings until Troy scored first in the bottom of the fourth. A Trojan walk and double to right center brought home the first run of the game and gave Troy the mid-game lead.
Each pitcher managed multiple strikeouts with their defense backing them up, keeping the offensive opportunites to a minimal.
In the sixth inning, bunts by both
Keri White and
Caylie Kifer became the largest threats the Trojan defense had faced all game. A single up the middle by
Haley Stewart brought home both runners and gave the Mountaineers the lead and eventually the game.
Sydney Holland picked up the well deserved win in game three after suffering the loss in both of the first two games on Friday. Holland improves to 12-8 on the season, picking up two strikeouts on five hits and allowing only one run.
"We beat a very good Troy team today," head coach Shelly Hoerner said. "I am so proud of our team's resilience after a tough loss last night. Sydney pitched a great game with tough defense backing her up."
The Mountaineers are back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Western Carolina for a midweek doubleheader. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. game two.
