STATESBORO, GA. – Appalachian State (12-6) defeated Georgia Southern (13-9) on Friday in a 7-0 shutout to secure the Sun Belt series win.
Sydney Holland picked up her fifth win as a Mountaineer for a complete game shutout.
Today's win marks the third Sun Belt series victory for the Mountaineers. Their last series victory was against the ULM Warhawks in the opening weekend of Sun Belt play in 2018, and the first series victory was in 2017 against UT Arlington.
Senior
Megan Walker continued her hitting streak against the Eagles, batting 3-3 with a double and two singles. Walker is now 7-7 against the Eagles this weekend after having only three hits in the previous 16 games. In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, she made a fantastic diving play in centerfield to end the game.
The first Mountaineer run of the game came in the top of the third inning after back-to-back doubles from
Baylee Morton and Walker. Three scoreless innings followed for both the Apps and the Eagles, but App State picked up six insurance runs off of four hits in the top of the seventh inning.
Ally Walters led off with a single to centerfield. Walker and White both followed with singles before
Caylie Kifer drew a walk for the RBI.
Jenny Dodd was hit by a pitch to bring in the third run.
Haley Stewart's singled through the right side, bringing the Mountaineers to a total of five runs.
Mary Pierce Barnes earned an RBI on a groundout to the first baseman, and
Dakota Christie scored the seventh and final run for the Apps on a wild pitch while pinch running for Stewart.
