Mountaineers Finish Play at First Spring Tournament

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Appalachian State Women's Golf team finished play at the two-day Oyster Shuck Match Play where they finished fourth out of eight teams.

The first day included 36-holes where the Mountaineers won their first match against North Carolina A&T, four matches to one, led by seniors Joliana Elias' 6&5 victory and Patricia Thompson's 5&4 win, propelling them forward in the winner's bracket.

"Our spirits were high, and it was our first step towards accomplishing our goal," said head coach Heather Brown.  "But we knew each match would be more and more competitive."

Second 18-hole match of the day the Apps faced off against Big South opponent Gardner-Webb University, where they lost two to three with four of the five matchups going down to the final hole or extra holes.

"Gardner-Webb was tighter than our morning match, so we were really just trying to survive and advance to get into the championship," said Brown. "Each pairing was close so we knew it would come down the final putts and it did."

App would go into the final day with a matchup against Radford University that would determine who takes third place where they ended up losing two matches to three, with the final match between sophomore Mogie Adamchik and Radford's Riko Nagai going to extra holes.

"Our biggest take away was from the high-pressure situations. We fell short but they are needed to grow and I am confident that it will reveal itself in the upcoming tournaments," said Brown. "Getting better every round is a part of our process. Even though we lost todays match, we left it all out on the course and were better today than we were yesterday and that's what we are striving for."

Thompson, Elias, Melany Chong and Abby Bolt each won two out of their three matches throughout the tournament.

The Mountaineers will be back in action two weeks from now at the Bucknell Spring Break Intercollegiate in Orlando, Fla.
