Mountaineers Fall at Home to Georgetown 2-0

BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State University field hockey (1-1) dropped a tight match to the visiting Georgetown Hoyas 2-0 at Adcock Field on Sunday.

The Mountaineers kept the pressure on the Hoyas (2-0), outshooting the visitors 10-9. Sophomore Meghan Smart led Appalachian with four shots, one of which was on target.

Early in the match, App possessed the ball deep in Georgetown's half before the Hoyas pounced quickly to take a 1-0 advantage on the counter attack.

Appalachian had a chance to equalize in the 20th minute with a penalty stroke, but Georgetown goalie Ciara Weets saved sophomore Annette Jarosz's attempt from the spot. The score remained 1-0 at halftime with the Mountaineers holding a 7-4 advantage in shots.

In the second half, freshman Fredi Stegen tried to ignite her team when her shot pinged off the post in the 40th minute. Georgetown took advantage of Stegen's misfire, doubling its lead only five minutes later.

Three players for the Black and Gold finished with two or more shots, which included Smart (4), sophomore Veerle Van Heertum (2) and Stegen (2). Junior goalkeeper Rachel Gaines saved six of Georgetown's eight shots on goal.

Appalachian also earned six penalty corners -- three in each half.

The Mountaineers will look to get back in the win column on Friday when they host LIU Brooklyn (0-1) at 7 p.m.
