BOONE, N.C. - During the 2018-19 athletics calendar year, the Department of Athletics will recognize all women's sports to celebrate the milestone of 50 years in women's sports for Appalachian State with special events and reunions.
Fifty years ago, Appalachian State University field hockey broke ground as the first-ever women's intercollegiate sport in Black and Gold history to give women the opportunity to excel in collegiate athletics.
The celebration starts this weekend with the Appalachian Trailblazers Dinner this evening in Appalachian's Roess Dining Hall from 6-8 p.m. Special recognition for the Appalachian Trailblazers will be held at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, Sept. 22, when Appalachian State football takes on Gardner-Webb inside The Rock, all alumnae from women's sports will be recognized during the game. Every former female student-athlete will receive a ticket to the game, while a guest ticket is $30.
Capping off the exciting weekend will be a special ribbon-cutting ceremony for field hockey and their brand-new field hockey facility on Sunday, Sept. 23, against ACC foe Louisville at 11 a.m. It's just one of the many celebrations and reunions this year for 50 years in women's sports.
