MOBILE, ALA. – Appalachian State softball's efforts fell short in a doubleheader against South Alabama on Saturday, April 21.
The Apps suffered their third walk-off loss in a row this season after a heartbreaking game one loss, 0-1. Only a few hits separated the Jaguars from the Mountaineers in game two for South Alabama's 5-1 win.
Despite dropping the doubleheader to South Alabama, the Mountaineers defense has stayed tough with no errors on the day and only one error in the last four games. Pitching continues to progress as well, keeping South Alabama scoreless in three of 13 innings on the day. The Mountaineers had two hits in game one and improved to seven hits in game two.
Game One (L, 0-1)
Kenzie Longanecker started in the circle for App State. Despite Alabama's eight hits, Longanecker and the Mountaineer defense were able to hold the Jaguars through six scoreless innings. The Jaguars won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning with two doubles.
Keri White and
Heather Josey were the two Mountaineer hits.
Game Two (L, 1-5)
The Mountaineers were the first to score in game two. App State produced their sole run of the game in the top of the third inning. Back-to-back-to-back singles from
Megan Walker,
Avery Wheatley and
Keri White loaded the bases.
Jenny Dodd drew a walk to bring the run across the plate for an RBI.
South Alabama responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning with three singles that led to two runs. The Jaguars scored three more in the bottom of the sixth after a walk, a single up the middle, and two doubles.
Callie Kuykendall threw 5.1 innings while
Katie Williford finished out the game for the final out of the sixth inning. Kuykendall struck out five Jaguars and walked three.
The Apps return tomorrow for the series finale at 10 a.m. CT (11 a.m. ET). The game time has been moved up due to projected weather forecasts.
