Box Score 2 MONTGOMERY, ALA. – Appalachian State softball fell to Nicholls State (4-1) and Alabama State (10-4) on Friday, Feb. 16 in day one of the Black & Gold Tournament hosted by Alabama State. The Mountaineers are now 1-5 on the season.
Game One
App State scored one run against the Nicholls State Colonels in seven innings. Four Mountaineers had one hit apiece for a team total of four.
Avery Wheatley scored on a double from
Keri White in the bottom of the third inning.
Jenny Dodd hit a double to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning, but neither hit from White nor Dodd could pull out a victory for the Mountaineers.
Kenzie Longanecker pitched for 5 innings and allowed five hits.
Game Two
Against the tournament-host Alabama State, the Mountaineers had four runs, eight hits and three errors.
Callie Kuykendall pitched the first three innings.
Katie Williford and
Annaleise Kennedy entered later in the game.
The Apps scored their four runs on four hits in the top of the second inning.
Heather Josey hit her first home run of the season for the Mountaineers' first run of the game.
Megan Walker went 2-3 with two hits against the Hornets.
Alabama State answered the Mountaineers' runs with one run in the second inning. The Hornets scored at least one run an inning for the last four innings to bring their total to ten runs by the end of the game.
Sidney Russell batted 1.000 in four at-bats against Alabama State with four hits, one RBI and two triples. Her back-to-back triples allowed her to tie the App State record for most triples in a single game. She also landed herself in the record book for tying most hits in a single game with four.
The Mountaineers continue play on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. against Holy Cross at Dean Fain Park and 7:30 p.m. against Alabama State at Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
