Softball Earns First Win of the Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MACON, GA. – Appalachian State softball split two on Saturday, Feb. 11 with a loss against Buffalo and a win against Morehead State to bring the record to 1-3 so far this season. The win against Morehead State was Head Coach Shelly Hoerner's first win at App State.
 
Game One vs. Buffalo (L, 2-5)
The Mountaineers had a big inning early in the game. In the second inning, Jenny Dodd sent a shot to the fence in left center for a single followed by a single from Haley Stewart on the right side. On a passed ball, Dodd scored the first run, and Stewart advanced to third. Megan Walker slapped a single up the middle for an RBI, bringing the score to 2-0 in favor of the Mountaineers.
 
Stewart ended the third inning with a diving play to tag first base with her glove to beat the runner and make the out. Alisha Josey stood out on both defense and offense in the sixth inning with a single up the middle and a diving play in the outfield for the final out of the inning. Josey went 2-3 against the Bulls to resume her hitting streak.
 
Kenzie Longanecker allowed only four hits from the Bulls in five innings.
 
Game Two vs. Morehead State (W, 15-8)
The Apps put up five innings with runs for a total of 16 hits and only four strikeouts in 35 at bats. Keri White went 4-5 in game two of the day with one RBI.  Avery Wheatley went 2-3 with two hits and one RBI and one walk. Katie Williford was credited with the win, pitching 3.2 innings allowing five of Morehead State's nine hits.
 
After two scoreless innings, the Mountaineers came out swinging in the third. Keri White hit a double followed by a single from Russell to score White. App State continued scoring after two outs with a double from Heather Josey and a single from Wheatley that loaded the bases. Megan Walker stepped up with a 3-RBI double to clear the bases. In the third inning alone, App State scored seven runs on five hits.
 
In the fifth inning, Callie Kuykendall entered for Williford. With bases loaded, Kuykendall struck out the batter to get out of the inning, leaving the Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the fifth. Kuykendall had three strikeouts on the day while Williford had two.
 
App State is now 1-3 on the season and holds an all-time record of 3-1 against Morehead State.
 
Noteworthy Stats:
  • Keri White joins the record book with four hits in a single game.
  • App State now holds an all-time 3-1 record with the Eagles.
  • Six players had a multi-hit game against the Eagles.
  • Alisha Josey is on a 12-game hitting streak with two multi-hit games so far this season.
