BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey (2-3) earned its second victory of the season via a 2-0 shutout over the Davidson Wildcats (0-3) on Friday night at Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field. This is App State's first shutout victory since Oct. 11, 2015, when the Mountaineers defeated Davidson by the same score.
The Mountaineers took a quick 1-0 lead just three minutes into the match whenÂ
Taylor Cimbalist scored off a high pass from
Savanna Sheridan. That goal was Cimbalist's second of the season.
For the remainder of the first half, App State would continue to press the Wildcat defense and put up ten shots with most of them flying wide.
Rachel Gaines preserved the lead with two saves.
Out of the half, the Apps continued to put pressure on Davidson's goalkeeper Sarah Zeszotarski who made seven second-half saves. In the 63rd minute,
Veerle Van Heertum was able to find a hole beyond Zeszotarki and netted her first-career goal, putting the Mountaineers up 2-0.
Gaines played all 70 minutes in goal and made six saves to pick up her second victory of the season. Cimbalist led the Mountaineer offense with five shots, two on goal, and was followed by Van Heertum who had three shots.
Meghan Smart also posted five shots.
Appalachian returns to Adcock Field on Sunday, Sept. 10, to host No. 4 North Carolina in a 2 p.m. matchup.
