FARMVILLE, VA. - Appalachian State University field hockey (3-7, 1-2 MAC) dropped a 4-1 decision to Longwood (9-1, 2-0 MAC), who moved into first place in the Mid-American standings with the win.
Rebecca McLean scored her first goal of the season, which was also the senior's fifth of her Mountaineer career.
App State was unable to score in the first half behind seven shots, all in the final five minutes before halftime. The Mountaineer defense and goalkeeper
Rachel Gaines faced eight shots in the first half, but Gaines made five saves while allowing just one goal.
The Lancers scored three more times in the second half to take a 4-0 lead. McLean found the back of the net on a penalty corner in the 56th minute. Her senior classmates,
Savanna Sheridan and
Taylor Cimbalist, earned the assist on McLean's score.
The Mountaineers will stay in Virginia for a game tomorrow in Richmond against Virginia Commonwealth. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
