Appalachian State University field hockey dropped its first exhibition match in a 5-1 decision to Wake Forest on Friday night.
The Demon Deacons scored twice in the first 30 minutes of the match before Taylor Cimbalist cut the deficit in half with a goal of her own in the 35th minute. The senior midfielder scored the lone Mountaineer goal unassisted off a Wake Forest turnover.Â
The score remained 2-1 going into the half, but the Demon Deacons netted three goals in the second half, two by Alexis Grippo, to end the match 5-1.
The Mountaineer defense was led by goalkeeper Rachel Gaines who protected the net for 70:00 minutes and swatted away 12 of Wake Forest's attacks.
