Field Hockey Falls to Miami in MAC Semifinals

KENT, OHIO - Appalachian State University field hockey dropped a 6-1 decision to top-seeded Miami in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament on Friday afternoon at Murphy Mellis Field. Freshman Veerle Van Heertum scored the lone Mountaineer goal.

The RedHawks will advance to the championship game on Saturday against the winner of Kent State and Longwood, while the 2017 season has ended for the Mountaineers.

Miami scored its first goal just 43 seconds into the game and then scored again in the 11th minute. At the 18:14 mark, Taylor Cimbalist inserted a penalty corner to Savanna Sheridan that was passed to Van Heertum for App's only goal of the game.

The Mountaineers were held to just one shot in the second half, while Miami put up nine shots and scored four goals to take the game, 6-1.

Goalkeeper Rachel Gaines faced 18 shots and made 10 saves, bringing her season total to 159 saves (8.36 saves per game).

Appalachian ends the season with an 8-11 overall record, which is head coach Meghan Dawson's highest single-season win total in her three years at the helm.
