Box Score MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH. - Sophomores
Ali Williams and
Melissa Nobile, each scored a goal to lead Appalachian State University field hockey (5-8, 2-3 MAC) to a 2-0 victory at Central Michigan (0-12, 0-3) on Saturday afternoon.
App State held the advantage in shots in the first half, five-to-two, but neither team was able to score. Mountaineer goalkeeper
Rachel Gaines made one save and CMU's goalkeeper made two.
At the 42nd minute, freshman
Veerle Van Heertum had a shot deflected by the Chippewa goalkeeper, but senior
Taylor Cimbalist corralled the deflection. Cimbalist sent a pass to Williams for the sophomore's fifth goal of the season.
Central Michigan did not back down and received three penalty corners and had five shots over the next 14 minutes of play. The Mountaineer defense held strong and Gaines made two saves over that span.
Nobile scored her first goal of the season in the 56th minute, this time off another deflection by CMU's goalkeeper. The Mountaineers went up 2-0 and forced a Chippewa timeout.
Gaines picked up her fifth victory of the season and her sixth career victory, while making four saves. Both teams finished with five penalty corners, but App State out shot Central Michigan, 13-to-9.
The Mountaineers will face Central Michigan again tomorrow in a nonconference matchup at noon.
