Appalachian State
Head Coach Scott Satterfield
Opening Statement
We had a great crowd and we really fed off that crowd tonight. It was outstanding. Can't say enough about our defense. If you had to pick a team to play on a short week, five days preparation, it probably wouldn't be Georgia Southern with how effective they are in the run game, but our coaching staff did a phenomenal job getting our kids ready to play. It's a hard task to stop those guys. Our offensive line played extremely physical. We out-rushed them 231-188 and that was goal of ours coming into this game. That speaks a lot about our offensive line. Our receiving core has been very unselfish. We rotate a lot of our receivers. We try to take what the defense gives us and Taylor Lamb does a great job of putting the ball in the hands of the playmakers.
On how much of a confidence builder this is for the team
To me, we're right where we want to be in the Sun Belt Conference. Our whole goal is to win this conference and we're 3-0, so there's a lot more football to be played. This was a nice win, but we have several more to play to get this conference. We'll rest tomorrow, but all of our focus will be on Troy when we get back on Sunday. Our kids play with confidence and the whole year we've played with confidence. It's awesome to be sitting here with six wins and to be bowl eligible. It's awesome to be at that milestone. That's what everybody looks at, that six-win mark. And for it to be the first season we can go to a bowl and we're there in seven games, that's pretty sweet.
On Jalin Moore
I thought he ran extremely hard tonight when he got his carries and got some big runs and broke some tackles. He's a guy we'd like to get more involved. He works really hard. He has good vision and speed. He was a big part of our offense.
On Ronald Blair
He's got extremely long arms and he is one of the most powerful players we've had here. He's the fastest defensive lineman we have and he is one of the most humble linemen you'll meet. Tonight, he played really well. He's a mismatch for anyone we play against and it will be that way all season.
DE Ronald Blair
On the meaning of playing in a nationally-televised game
It's a lot of work. We couldn't have come this far this time last year and we were like 1-5. We feel like all of our hard work is going towards a good cause and we still have a lot of football to play. But we feel good about this win right now.
On the defense topping itself every week and is there more room for improvement
That's pretty much our goal. Every week, we want to get better, not stay the same and not get worse. Our task is to get better no matter what aspect of the game it is.
WR Simms McElfresh
On the fourth down conversion
That was a designed play and we had practiced it all week. We knew that it would work, so we just had to execute it.
On the six-win milestone
Being able to be bowl eligible on the FBS level is huge.
QB Taylor Lamb
On his players' dependability
It's awesome. You've got 3-4 guys every play that you can depend on and that's a good feeling. Any of our guys can get open.
Georgia Southern
Head Coach Willie Fritz
Opening Statement
We ran into a really good team. App State played excellent and they did a very good job. I felt good about things after the opening series, but they did a good job of defending the option. We just never stayed on schedule throughout the game with a loss here and a minus play there. Those types of things didn't put us in good down and distance type situations. In the second half, we had an opportunity to get a field goal and score a touchdown to cut the lead and we didn't get that done either. It was a frustrating night and they outplayed us so give a lot of credit to them
On where the team goes from here
We have a long drive back, a six-hour trip back. Go to classes tomorrow, give the guys off Friday and Saturday and then come back Sunday. We'll watch a little bit of this game and move on to Texas State.
On missed opportunities in the second half (missed field goal and interception)
They were both big. If we get a touchdown there, we're back in the game and have a lot of confidence. But we missed a field goal and have a minus play. That was certainly a big turning point in the game. We had an opportunity later there but threw the pick. We were just off rhythm tonight.
On App State's offensive game plan and ability to stay balanced
They did an excellent job, excellent job. Towards the end there, they started running the option and hadn't run it a whole lot. We looked like we hadn't worked on it much probably because we hadn't worked on it much. They did a good job of running the clock out there at the end of the game.
On the loss of safety Matt Dobson and its impact
Obviously, you always want to have one of your better players out there, but we knew there was a long shot for him to play. We were hoping he'd be able to play, so yeah we missed him. Guys have to step up, though, and get the job done. This is a whole team loss. I did a poor job as a head coach. We didn't have a real great game plan and we didn't execute the game plan that we did have. We gotta learn from this and we gotta move on. There's a lot of football left to be played this season.
WR Myles Campbell
On what went wrong with the execution
It was a tough loss. We just got outplayed tonight. We're just gonna move on. We can't do anything about this loss now, our goal is still to win the Sun Belt and we're going to do what we have to do to win the Sun Belt.
On App State's defensive success on first down
On offense, you never want to put yourself in second and long and third and long situations. We usually do better on first-down plays so that put us in a tough spot. We'll learn from it and we'll bounce back.
On App State's defense
They're definitely a good team and a good defense. I hope the best for them. They came to play tonight and we didn't.
LB Chris DeLaRosa
On what's next and moving forward
We really try to stay optimistic with everything. The good thing is that if we win the next game, we'll be bowl eligible and that would be the first time in school history. We have that to look forward to.
