LIBERTY 55, APPALACHIAN STATE 48
OCTOBER 11, 2014 • BOONE, N.C. (KIDD BREWER STADIUM)
POSTGAME QUOTES
Appalachian State
Head Coach Satterfield
Opening Statement
“The game came down to turnovers. We had four turnovers, two fumbles and two picks. It's hard to look at 628 yards of offense and 48 points and know you're not going to win. Liberty's offense was good, the second half I think they tried to control the clock and just ground and pound, to keep our offense off of the field. We played well enough to come down and win it at the end. We have to regroup and find out how to win a football game.
On the play of his defense
“We have two true freshmen on our defense and we have a young secondary. With so much youth it is learning on the job training. I told them they have to grow up to make plays. If they are going to be great players, we have to build a stronger defense.”
On the last play of the game
“We were going to take a shot with our tight end, when you see shots like htat you have to take them. However, the shot wasn't there and Taylor knew he had to throw it away. Taylor played well tonight, it just comes down to experience and it was a learning curve.”
QB Taylor Lamb
On the performance of the offense
“We played well, except for the turnovers. We learned a lot of things tonight and that is a great thing to take away from the game.
WR Shaedon Meadors
On his first game
“I was really nervous at first but the team believed in me and because they believed in me I believed in myself. The coaches told me that I might have to play and that they had faith in me and because I'm a competitor I had to do it.”
S Doug Middelton
On the performance of the defense
“We didn't do our part tonight. Yes, we have some young players but age has nothing to do with what happened tonight. You have to go out there and do what your job is for your team.”
Liberty
Head Coach Turner Gill
On playing a back-and-forth thriller
“Our players continue to play hard. I was proud of the way they continued to go no matter what was happening. Our team continued to believe and coaches keep uplifting our players and that's what our offense and defense kept going. Obviously defense wasn't playing as well, offense continued to move the ball fairly good, we just said keep playing, plays are going to happen.”
On coming off a double-overtime defeat at home
“Well we always talk about just getting ready for the next play, getting ready for the next day. You just want to go and watch the tape and correct it and that's what we have always done. We didn't really harp on anything too long, because you can't do that. If you continue to talk about the game before, then your players can't move forward and we as coaches can't move forward.”
On WR Dante Shells' performance
“He worked hard as far as in the practices, trying to catch the football and keep his focus on what he needed to get done. Great to see him do this in the ballgame. Now, if he continues to do what he's doing, then I think our offense is going to be very, very explosive, they can't double-coverage us with [Darrin] Peterson.”
On QB Josh Woodrum's game
“We didn't run the ball well early but we know we can throw the football if we have to. We believe in Josh Woodrum, we got good receivers, we got good backs, so we took what they were giving to us. In this game, here, we took some throws a little bit more than we have in the past, but again, we'll do whatever it takes to win the football game.”
S Jacob Hagen
On the final play
“I was in man coverage. I had the tight end man to man. He threw it up to him, so I had to go get it. The QB trusted his guy and I had to turn into a receiver and go get it.”
On winning a close game
“This is huge. This is my senior year. My fifth year around this program and this has got to be the biggest win. Building momentum going into the bye week before we start conference play. It's Huge for the program and the university.”
On playing defense in high scoring game
“In a game like this when it's going back and forth, you have to stay a team no arguing going back and forth. Play with passion. Something good is going to happen when we fly to the ball. Someone is going to make a play.”
WR Dante Shells
On the long TD catch
“It felt great but that's something I came here to do. It's something that I need to do. It felt great, but that is feeling I should have often.”
On the work he has put in to improve
“Bo Swanson and I have been getting extra work in. I like throwing with him and we'll stay after and do over the shoulder drills and looking the ball all the way in.”
