CHATTANOOGA 35, APPALACHIAN STATE 28
NOVEMBER 2, 2013 • BOONE, N.C. (KIDD BREWER STADIUM)
POSTGAME NOTES
Appalachian State
Head Coach Scott Satterfield
Opening Statement:
“First of all, I give credit to Chattanooga. I think they did a good job at building a program and their kids know how to close games. We were able to move the ball but the differences in the game were key. I think the pick six and not getting points on fourth down in the rezone were keys to the loss. The fluke play with the Chattanooga punter helped them and took the momentum. Our defense did a good job today, but two huge pass plays where we were coached to stay over top were keys to how they won. We kept fighting back in the game, but two bad passes at the end of the game made the difference.”
On passing the ball on the last two play of the game:
“I think in the second half, Chattanooga did a good job at stopping the run inside. During the timeout, we talked about running the ball on 3rd & 2 and maybe going for it on fourth down if we didn't get it but in their coverage we got players open and just didn't make the pass.”
Defensive End Thomas Bronson
On stopping the quarterback runs:
“Their quarterback is a great athlete. We had to hit him in the knees and not give him the extra yards. He is well coached, but we had to hit him low. I have to give him respect.”
Running Back Marcus Cox
On the execution of the final two plays:
“I was hoping that I had the ball in my hands on the last two plays, but that's every player. We had a chance to execute and we didn't. Whenever you get a chance to put a team away, you have to execute.”
Wide Receiver Tony Washington
On losing the game:
“I think this game hurts a little more than the others because we have been playing so well the last couple of weeks and outside of the few things that happened, it was a good game for us. We just have to learn to finish games. We would have liked to have this one but if you're not winning, you're learning.”
Quarterback Kameron Bryant
On not converting final two plays:
“The third down we tried to complete the out route and the ball didn't get there. On the fourth down we tried to give the ball to our tight end in the back of the end zone. We talked about running the ball, but coach made a good call. Hindsight is 20/20 though.”
Chattanooga
Head Coach Russ Huesman
Opening Statement:
“The best win I've ever been involved in in my life. Our guys have some guts about them. They're special and half the time they do it without coaching. They're winners and they know how to win and I am just so proud of them.”
On Nakevion Leslie's interception for touchdown:
“Keionta Davis hit the guy as he was coming around and because of that we got the pick and were able to score, so it was huge.”
On fake punt, field goal, onside kick:
“Before the game I told the defense that we're going to fake a field goal, we're going to fake a punt and we're probably going to kick an onside kick before it's all set and done. I told them that the only reason we can do these things is because I believe in our defense. They'll get a stop for us if it doesn't work out. Fortunately, they (fake field goal and punt) both worked out. They were wanting me to call it (fake punt) again later in the game. My coaches told me that they didn't think it was a fake, but we definitely called it.”
Quarterback Jacob Huesman
On the feeling of winning the game:
“Unbelievable. It feels unreal. It hasn't even hit me yet. Just on top of the world right now. “
On the defense coming up big:
“Thanks to the defense. Unbelievable job by the defense at the end of the game. I can't even say enough about it because I never doubted them for a second. Those guys are warriors, fighting until the end. I'm so proud of them.”
Defensive Back Nakevian Leslie
On the interception for touchdown:
“I would have to say that was the best play of my career by far. Luckily by the pressure of my friend, Keionta (Davis). He was able to hit the quarterback and so he threw the ball short and I was able to pick it off and run with it.”
On young guys playing a key role in the win:
“It's a lot of pressure, but at the end of the day thanks to the older guys, they helped prepare us all year long. With the injuries that we had, of course we had to step up and it was just our time in such a big game today.”
