BOONE, N.C. - App State women's golf welcomed North Carolina native and freshman Lenoir-Rhyne transfer Ava Tharpe to the Mountaineer golf program Thursday afternoon.

"It's always great to land and welcome a local as a Mountaineer," head coach Heather Brown said. "I look forward to Ava contributing to our success right away."

Tharpe is from Roaring River, North Carolina, and attended East Wilkes High School. Tharpe has yet to officially tee off at the collegiate level as Lenoir-Rhyne did not compete this past fall due to COVID-19.

In high school, she was a three-time Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Tharpe qualified for the NCHSAA 1A/2A State Championship all four years of her high school career.

In 2019, she was the regional championship medalist and went on to finish 19th in the state championship field. Off the course, Tharpe earned all-conference honors in women's basketball as a senior and was valedictorian of her graduating class.

Tharpe is immediately eligible for spring 2021 competition for the Mountaineers.
