BOILING SPRINGS — App State Wrestling maintained its unbeaten SoCon dual record by earning bonus-point wins at the first eight weights, capped by back-to-back pins from freshmen
Stephan Monchery and
Bryson Terrell, in a 38-8 victory at Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night.
JohnMark Bentley picked up his 150th career victory as App State's head coach.
The first-period pins from Monchery, a true freshman heavyweight, and Terrell, a redshirt freshman at 125 pounds, followed No. 28
Carson Floyd's 12-0 major decision in a ranked matchup with No. 33 Josh McCutchen at 197 pounds.
App State improved to 6-3 overall and 5-0 in the SoCon with home duals remaining against Chattanooga, Davidson and Campbell.
Monchery and Terrell each gave up the first takedowns Tuesday, but Monchery followed an escape with a pin of Peyton McComas. Terrell followed his reversal with a pin of Tyson Lane, who had recently posted a victory wrestling up at 133 pounds against a three-time NCAA qualifier from Campbell.
Back-to-back major decisions from
Kaden Keiser (11-2 at 149 pounds) and
Jeremiah Price (10-1 at 157 pounds) started the dual and preceded back-to-back tech falls from No. 7
Will Miller (20-5 at 165 pounds) and No. 28
Luke Uliano (15-0 in just 2:08 at 174 pounds).
Logan Eller's 15-4 major decision at 184 set up the first of two ranked matchups between the Mountaineers and Runnin' Bulldogs (4-8, 1-3 SoCon). Floyd emerged from a back-and-forth scramble with a takedown for a 3-0 lead in the first, then stayed on top for the final 1:49 of the opening period.
Floyd had another takedown for a 7-0 lead in the second period and produced four near fall points from the top position in the third.
The other ranked matchup occurred at 133 pounds, where No. 24 TK Davis from Gardner-Webb won a 14-11 decision against No. 33
Chad Bellis, who had a late takedown and cut but couldn't come up with another takedown with little time remaining. Another ranked Gardner-Webb wrestler, No. 20 Todd Carter at 141 pounds, won by tech fall against redshirt freshman
Aldo Hernandez.
The 2024-25 season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station. App State hosts Chattanooga for a big SoCon dual in Boone on Sunday at 3 p.m. It will also be the Old Timers Match in Varsity Gym.
