Edwards, Conetta Win Appalachian Open Titles

BOONE, N.C. — Riley Edwards (141 pounds) and Anthony Conetta (157 pounds) won Appalachian Open titles with 4-0 runs through their brackets Saturday, when the Mountaineers produced five finalists and 10 semifinalists among their 20 entries.
 
Edwards won decisions by scores of 7-4 and 7-2 before posting a 5-4 semifinal win against North Carolina's Elias Nevida and a 5-4 finals win against unattached true freshman teammate Jarvis Little.
 
A tying takedown with nine seconds left in the second period of the semifinal and a third-period escape proved to be the difference in that match. Edwards had a takedown with 13 seconds left in the first period of the final, and Little's tying takedown with 23 seconds left in the third period was followed by an escape from Edwards with 13 seconds left.
 
Conetta won decisions by scores of 8-1, 5-1 and 8-2 to reach the final, where he used a takedown midway through the second period to propel him to a 4-2 decision against North Carolina's Joey Showalter.
 
In addition to Little, App State also got second-place finishes from unattached wrestlers Colby McBride (2-1 at 125 pounds) and Jayden Dobeck (3-1 at 165 pounds).
 
Ranked wrestlers Luke Uliano (174 pounds) and Carson Floyd (197 pounds) both took third place with 4-1 records that included semifinal losses and a combined eight bonus point victories.
 
Floyd was leading 1-0 in the third period when he ended up in a bad spot and was pinned by North Carolina's Robert Platt. Floyd had three first-period pins and a 15-5 major decision in his four victories.
 
Uliano became bloodied early in a 16-10 loss to North Carolina's Nick Fea, who built a 10-2 lead before a second and third reversal from Uliano (who had built riding time over a minute) helped cut his deficit to 10-7 early in the third. With Uliano aggressively going for a takedown after a Fea escape pushed the score to 11-7, Fea recorded a takedown and near fall points.
 
App State's other placer was unattached true freshman Brayden Fahrbach, who went 3-2 at 141 pounds to give the Mountaineers three of four semifinalists at that weight.
 
The 2024-25 season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station. App State (3-3, 2-0 SoCon) is back in action Monday in Boone with a home dual against SoCon foe Presbyterian at 7 p.m. in Varsity Gym.
