HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – App State Softball dropped a Sun Belt Conference series opener Friday at Marshall, falling 7-2 at Dot Hicks Field.
The Mountaineers (19-25, 4-15) cut their deficit to 6-2 in the sixth inning, when
Kayt Houston followed
Grace Barrett's leadoff walk with an RBI double and Houston scored from third on
Macy Hamby's fielder's choice.
Sejal Neas struck out three batters from Marshall (22-24, 8-11) in 3.2 innings, and
Kaylie Northrop allowed one earned run over the final 2.1 innings.
How it Happened
Marshall's Brooklyn Ulrich opened the bottom of the first inning with her 12th homer of the season, and the Thundering Herd loaded the bases with nobody out in the third inning before Bub Feringa delivered a two-run single. Neas limited the damage by inducing an infield popout, recording a strikeout and getting a groundout in the next three at-bats.
In the fourth inning, Feringa followed an RBI single with a two-run double to give her four RBIs. Marshall added a final run in the sixth inning.
