Mountaineers Drop Regular Season Finale Against Chanticleers

Story Links

CONWAY, S.C. – The Appalachian State softball team (29-24, 10-15 Sun Belt) fell to Coastal Carolina (21-27, 7-17 Sun Belt) by a final score of 4-1 in the regular season finale on Sunday. A three-run third inning for the Chanticleers proved to be the difference as these two teams played in their final contest before the conference tournament next week.

Coastal Carolina opened the scoring early, plating one run in the bottom of the first inning. Sejal Neas was then able to work out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the deficit at one after the first frame.

After a scoreless second inning, Coastal Carolina extended its advantage to four runs after the third frame. Highlighted by a two-run homer from Maddy Jennings, the Chanticleers took their largest lead of the day after three innings of play.

The Mountaineers got on the board in the top of the fifth frame. Following Addie Wray's lead-off double, the freshman was able to come home following a wild pitch from the Chanticleers.

Wray paced the Mountaineers offensively, tallying one double and one run scored on the day. Kayt Houston and Mary Pierce Barnes both added one hit as well.

Sejal Neas and Kaylie Northrop split the pitching responsibilities; Neas got the start while Northrop came in to relieve. Northrop gave up no runs and fanned two batters across three innings of work.

App State now awaits other results from around the league this weekend to determine their seeding for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Mobile, Ala. Next week. Where the Mountaineers are seeded will ultimately determine when and who they play to begin tournament action. The conference tournament is scheduled for May 11-14 and every game of the tournament will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
