Mountaineers Clinch Sun Belt Series Over Georgia Southern

BOONE, N.C. -- After a walk-off victory in the series opener yesterday, App State softball (19-13, 7-4 Sun Belt) clinched the series with a 7-1 win over Georgia Southern (8-20, 3-8 Sun Belt) on Saturday. Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Kayt Houston smashed a pair of home runs and McKenzie McCullen recorded a trio of hits to highlight an offensive afternoon.

The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning when a McCullen single brought Houston home. A three-run homer from Houston scored Addison Jones and Emma Jones to extend the advantage to 4-0. Mary Pierce Barnes added another run after an RBI single from Kati Waalk. Houston capped the scoring at seven runs after a two-run bomb in the sixth that scored Emily Parrott as well.

A pair of errors plagued the Mountaineers in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Shelby Barfield tallied an RBI single that scored Ashleigh Duty to put Georgia Southern on the board.

Houston paced the App State offense with three hits, two of which were home runs, part of a five-RBI day for the sophomore. McCullen also added three hits and drove in one run as well. Barnes recorded two hits and scored one run on the day.

Delani Buckner pitched the complete game, improving to 8-4 on the year. The sophomore maintained a perfect game through six innings, giving up no earned runs and striking out seven batters en route to the win.

The series will conclude tomorrow as the program plans to celebrate Parent Appreciation Day. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
