TROY, Ala. -- The App State softball team (23-16, 7-7 Sun Belt) dropped the opening contest of a three-game conference series at Troy (23-13, 9-7 Sun Belt) on Thursday evening by a final score of 2-0.
Troy opened the scoring early, plating one run in the bottom half of the first inning after Libby Baker singled up the middle to bring in Kelly Horne. The Trojans added a run in the second inning following an RBI-double from Logan Calhoun to double their advantage.
The two teams battled defensively all night, combining for just six hits on the night.
Addie Wray paced the Mountaineers with one hit, a single through the left side in the top of the second inning.
Delani Buckner got the start for the Mountaineers, pitching the entirety of the contest and giving up two runs on five hits. She retired the side in just six pitches in the third inning and got out of a one-out, two-on jam in the bottom of the fifth.
These two teams will close out the series tomorrow with a doubleheader that is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. ET. Due to expected inclement weather on Saturday, the series finale was pushed up from Sunday. Both games tomorrow will be streamed on ESPN+.
