ATHENS, Ga. — After winning their first four games of the Bulldog Classic, App State faced 16th-ranked host Georgia on Sunday and lost 10-2 in five innings.
Baylee Morton's two-run homer with
Kayt Houston aboard accounted for the Mountaineers' fourth-inning runs. The offense was held in check after App State outscored Ohio and UMass by a combined 30-7 over four games from Friday through Saturday.
For the five games, App State batted .336 as a team, led by Houston, who went 9-for-20 (.450) with seven RBIs, two homers, four extra-base hits and six runs scored. Four pitchers (
Delani Buckner,
Taylor Nichols,
Kaylie Northrop and
Sejal Neas) earned a win.
Four home runs, two apiece by Jayda Kearney and Sydney Chambley, were responsible for nine of Georgia's 10 runs Sunday. Kearney hit a second-inning grand slam to get Georgia (19-2) going.
Morton, Houston and
Emily Parrott had one hit apiece to lead App State, which went 2-0 against both Ohio and UMass over the first two days of the event. The Mountaineers (11-7) are scheduled to play their home opener Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Boston College.
