Wrestling Opens SoCon Schedule with Tuesday Doubleheader in Boone

BOONE, N.C. — Less than a week removed from picking up a ranked road win against an in-state ACC program, App State Wrestling will make its home dual debut Tuesday night with a doubleheader in Varsity Gym.
 
The Mountaineers (1-1) will open their SoCon schedule with a 4 p.m. dual against Bellarmine (1-0) and wrestle again at approximately 7 p.m. against Queens, a Division I newcomer from Charlotte. The Royals are 0-8 this season.
 
In between, at approximately 5:30 p.m., fans in attendance will be able to watch a high school dual between Fred T. Foard and Northwest Guilford.

Tickets can be purchased by clicking HERE. Tuesday's App State matches will also be streamed live at by Yosef Media, with access available by subscribing to The Grind's Rokfin channel with a pay-per-view rate of $10 per App State dual.

Season tickets for the 11 regular-season competitions (with two doubleheaders) on App State Wrestling's home schedule remain available for $55 (adults) and $25 (youth) by clicking HERE for an online purchase, contacting the ticket office at 828-262-7733 or going to the App State Athletics ticket office located at the Holmes Center.
 
Tuesday's event will be a Hunger and Health Coalition Match in Boone. Fans who bring at least three food items will receive a free ticket voucher to the Jan. 8 dual vs Binghamton, with this link providing a list of the most-needed items. Fans can also make a monetary donation at the door.
 
Fans attending wrestling events this season should be aware that Varsity Gym will have a clear bag policy for visitors this season. According to App State's clear bag policies:
  • Approved bags include clear plastic bags that do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12" and small clutch purses no larger than 4.5" x 6.5".
  • Bags that are not approved include diaper bags, backpacks, binocular cases, camera cases, tinted or printed pattern plastic bags, fanny packs, oversized tote bags & mesh bags, and purses exceeding 4.5" x 6.5".
App State was unofficially No. 28 in NWCA Coaches Poll voting before winning 19-16 at No. 21 North Carolina last week. Caleb Smith opened the dual with a first-period pin in a matchup of ranked 125-pound wrestlers, and Will Miller delivered a 7-5 victory against returning All-American Clay Lautt at 174 pounds in Miller's second career dual appearance.
 
In beating UNC for the fifth time overall and second time in the modern era, the Mountaineers also got wins from Sean Carter (133), Jon Jon Millner (major decision at 149) and Will Formato (165).

App State's Tommy Askey and Carson Floyd made their dual debuts against UNC, while Mason Fiscella made his first dual appearance as a heavyweight. Luke Uliano, like Miller, made just his second dual appearance.

The 2022-23 season is presented by Hungry Howies and Penn Station.

  • With classes finishes and students on break, parking lots are free to the public for this event, with the Rivers Street Deck across from Varsity Gym being the most popular option for wrestling events
