Men’s Soccer Posts Fourth Shutout with 1-0 Win over UNCA

BOONE, N.C. – The Appalachian State men's soccer team recorded its fourth shutout this season with a 1-0 win over UNC Asheville Wednesday night. The Mountaineers are now 6-2-0 on the season and 5-1 at home. UNCA falls to 1-6-1.

"I thought it was a good professional performance. We would have liked to be cleaner in some areas of the game but at the end of the day, everything we're trying to do in a game we got done tonight," head coach Jason O'Keefe said. "It's another shutout and a win so we'll take it and move forward."

Redshirt freshman Jacob Madden and the Mountaineer backline posted another solid 90 minutes for App State, conceding only five shots with one on goal. Madden made one save on the night. On the other end of the field, App State took 15 shots with five on goal. The Bulldogs' goalkeeper, Jarrett Payne, was tested several times throughout the match.

Although Appalachian held the advantage in shots during the first half, the Mountaineers could not find the back of the net and the game went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0. App State outshot the Bulldogs eight to two.

The breakthrough for the Mountaineers came in the 67th minute as Mayola Kinyua played a ball to Juan Hernandez making a run on the right flank. Hernandez found Nick Rogers in the box who finished far post for his second goal, and game-winner, of the season. With the assist, Hernandez is now tied for a team-high two assists.

The Mountaineers have almost a week off between matches, hosting East Tennessee State next Tuesday (10/1) at 7 p.m.
