Boone, N.C. -- The Appalachian State men's soccer team recorded its first win of the season, taking down back-to-back regular season Patriot League champion Loyola Maryland, 2-1 Sunday night.
Kelan Swales and
Nick Rogers scored their first goals in an App State uniform to clinch the victory.
The Mountaineers are now 1-1 on the season. Loyola Maryland falls to 0-2.
The second half was the deciding factor for the Mountaineers, scoring both goals a minute apart in the 48
th and 49
th minute to start the second half. The Greyhounds scored just three minutes later in the 52
nd, but the Mountaineers were able to shut down Loyola Maryland's offense the rest of the half to seal the victory.
The first half was even between the two squads, with each side taking four shots. Starting goalkeeper for the Mountaineers,
Jacob Madden, made one save in the 45 minutes.
Swales found the back of the net first for the Apps, beating a Greyhound defender at the top of the box followed by a finish into the left hand side of the goal.
Reed Hunnicutt was a big part of the next Mountaineer goal, streaking down the left side and finding Rogers in the box for the game-winner.
Morgan Lussi scored Loyola's lone goal of the game, finishing a loose ball outside of the 18.
The Greyhounds edged the Mountaineers in shots 13 to 11, with both of App State's shots on target resulting in goals. Madden ended the match with three key saves and tallied his first win for the Black and Gold. Chase Vosvick received the loss in goal for the Greyhounds.
The Apps continue their homestand next weekend, hosting George Mason on Friday (9/6) and American on Sunday (9/8). Kickoff for Friday's match is set for 7 p.m. and Sunday's match is slated for 3 p.m.
