CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Elliott Graves captured the 400-meter hurdles and
Jalen Virgil won the 100-meter dash to lead Appalachian State men's track & field at the Charlotte Invitational.
Graves won the 400-meter hurdles for the first time this season in 52.59 seconds, which was nearly .31 seconds faster than the next hurdler.
Virgil, who is also a member of the football team, won the 100-meter dash in his first race of the year with a time of 10.65 seconds. His mark was .11 seconds faster than the second place finisher.
Virgil also teamed with
De'Shawn Ballard,
Brenton Ervin and
Jabari Johnson for a first-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay in 40.77 seconds.
Graves was third in the 110-meter hurdles in a season-best 14.44 seconds, while Ballard placed third in the 100-meter dash in 10.83 seconds.
App State posted three top-eight finishes in two events.
In the hammer throw,
Peter Kenn was third was a throw of 177-7 (54.14m),
Evan Hardin was sixth with a PR mark of 157-11 (48.14) and
Zachary Weinstein was right behind in seventh with a PR toss of 156-4 (47.66).
The 3,000-meter steeplechase saw
Ryan Brown place fourth with a time of 9:17.61,
Lawson Benfield finish sixth in a season-best 9:31.49 and
Zachary Mercer cross seventh in a PR time of 9:39.75.
Kenn was also second in the discus with a toss of 148-5 (45.24m), with
Michael Albert finishing fifth in the event with a toss of 139-11 (42.66m). Albert also was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 45-7.75 (13.91m).
The high jump saw
Daniel Lauffenburger finish in a tie for third with a season-best mark of 6-4.00 (1.93m) and
Andrew Underdal finish in a tie for sixth place, clearing 6-2.00 (1.88m).
App State now has just two meets remaining before the Sun Belt Championships in Jonesboro Ark. from May 10 to May 12. The Mountaineers will compete again next weekend at the Duke Invitational.
