Mountaineers Tie Program Record Win Streak in Undefeated Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Appalachian State (8-3) overcame Marshall with a score of 2-1 in the final game of the Holy City Showdown on Sunday. This win ties the longest winning streak in program history that was previously set last season.

The Apps' defense stepped up in tough scenarios against the Thundering Herd during Sunday's game. Junior Caylie Kifer was unstoppable at shortstop with several diving plays to keep the Herd off the bases. A 1-6-3 double play in the top made for the Apps' second double play of the weekend.

Russell's double down the left field line and a single from White on the right side allowed the Mountaineers to score their first run in the bottom of the third inning. Marshall tied it up at 1-1 in the top of the sixth when an overthrow to second base allowed the runner to score from second base.

Haley Stewart ripped a double to the left field wall to in the bottom of the sixth. Jenny Dodd's sacrifice bunt moved pinch runner Gabby Buruato into scoring position. Once again, Alison Durrence stepped up with a single through the 3-4 hole to bring Buruato across the plate to get back on top, 2-1.

Kenzie Longanecker kept the Herd to two hits while striking out three batters in her third complete game of the season. She now holds a 4-0 record in the circle. From behind the plate, Baylee Morton threw out her second runner caught stealing this weekend.

The Mountaineers continue play next weekend in the Purple/Gold Challenge at Lipscomb in Nashville, Mar. 1-3. App State Softball would like to thank AutoStar Nissan of Boone for their support of the 2019 season.
