BOONE, N.C. – Troy rose above Appalachian State on Saturday, April 7 to close out the series. The Mountaineers fell 2-15 in five innings for game two that finished up today due to weather. Game three concluded with an 8-9 loss for App State despite a 7-0 lead in the second inning.
Game Two (L, 2-15, 5 innings)
The first four innings of game two occurred on Friday, April 6. The Mountaineers put up two runs on three hits, including a home run each from
Alisha Josey and
Jenny Dodd. Due to weather, the game was held off until Saturday, April 7, under the "halted game" rule. Troy was able to put up six more runs on Saturday in the fifth inning, and the Mountaineers fell 2-15.
Game Three (L, 8-9)
App State racked up seven runs in the second inning of game three for their first lead of the weekend. Dodd led off the inning with a solo home run.
Baylee Morton drew a walk, and
Haley Stewart was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base.
Ally Walters laid down a sacrifice bunt that lead to a defensive error by Troy's third baseman. Morton scored on the error for the Mountaineers' second run. On two outs,
Keri White's single up the middle scored two more. Troy loaded the bases and walked in A. Josey and Dodd for back-to-back runs, bringing the score to 6-0 in favor of App State.
Laura Sales scored on a failed pickoff attempt at third base.
Troy answered in the top of the third with three runs on two home runs and a double. App State hung one on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning after a single from
Megan Walker and an error allowed her to advance to scoring position on third base. White's sacrifice fly allowed Walker to score.
Troy tied it up and took the lead in the top of the sixth inning on three hits and two errors from the Mountaineers. After bases were loaded, Troy hit two two-RBI doubles. Combined with two defensive errors, Troy was able to put up five more runs by the end of the inning.
The Apps loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but Troy escaped without harm. Walker's single through the right side started off the seventh inning. Wheatley's sacrifice bunt advanced Walker, but a fly out and a strikeout ended the game.
Walker went 2-4 in game three. White went 1-4 with three RBI. Troy walked ten Mountaineers to contribute to the Apps' 6 RBI in game three.
The Mountaineers return to action for a midweek doubleheader at N.C. Central on Wednesday, April 11 at 1 & 3 p.m.
