BOONE, N.C. — Five members of the Appalachian State baseball team are currently playing in the Coastal Plain League.

Bailey Welch leads the league with 20 runs scored and is fifth in the league with six doubles, as he's played in 22 games for the High Point-Thomasville HiToms near his hometown of Randleman. He has five two-hit games, including a two-double performance June 7.

Kendall McGowan, one of three App State players with his hometown Forest City Owls, is hitting .340 (fifth in the league at 18-for-53) with 17 runs scored (eighth in the league) and 10 stolen bases (sixth in the league after injuries slowed him down during his freshman season with the Mountaineers). He had a 4-for-4 game with five runs scored on June 2 and hit a home run last Wednesday.

Joel McDaniel of nearby Lake Lure has played in 11 games for the Owls and posted eight hits with five RBIs. He went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored on June 14.

Bobby Hampton has started four games on the mound for the Owls and gone 1-1 with 8.44 strikeouts per nine innings. After allowing no runs in six innings of an exhibition victory, he struck out eight batters while giving up one earned run in seven innings of a June 2 win. On Saturday, in his most recent start, he allowed one run in six innings of an extra-inning victory for the Owls.

Jason Cornatzer has started four games on the mound for the Wilson Tobs. In a June 17 start, he allowed one run on two hits in five innings.
