App State Athletics Celebrates 2017-18 APPSPY Awards

App BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State Athletics celebrated the 2017-18 year of athletic achievements at the APPSPYs Awards Banquet on Monday evening in the Holmes Center. Decked out in their finest attire, student-athletes, coaches, administration and staff were all in attendance to applaud another year of accomplishments for the Mountaineers.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) organized the event. Women's golf's Savanna Wood and football's Victor Johnson hosted the evening while fellow SAAC members presented each award.

Men's soccer senior Mitchell Kilmer earned the prestigious Brakefield Award. Established by legendary App State football coach Jim Brakefield and his wife, Eloise, this award is given to a graduating student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average among all student-athletes.

Ashton Coley, a current sophomore on the field hockey team, earned the Goodyear Family Athletic Scholarship. George and Anne Goodyear founded this scholarship in 1994 for a rising junior with a minimum GPA of 2.0 who demonstrates strength of character in all that he or she does.

The Rick Edmundson Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Jenny Dodd, a junior on the softball team. This scholarship is awarded annually to a rising junior or senior who has exhibited loyalty and dedication to Appalachian State. He or she should give evidence of leadership potential and intelligence, exhibit sound and purposeful ambition, be vigorous and diligent in pursuit of duty and show compassion for others.

The crowd gave a standing ovation to John Weaver, director of track & field and cross country, as he won the Lifetime Achievement Award for his 39 years of coaching at App State. He also picked up hardware for the Jack Branch Award, created to honor Branch's many years of unselfish service and support to Mountaineer student-athletes and teams.
