PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. - It did it again, for the second time in four seasons, No. 7 seed Appalachian State University men's tennis pulled off an upset against a higher-seeded team. This time, it was against second-seeded Louisiana in a 4-2 win on Friday evening at Peachtree Tennis Center.
App State will have to face another team seeded higher, as it will face No. 3 seed South Alabama on Saturday at 3 p.m. on ESPN3.
The match came down to the wire, where the final two contests went to a third set.
With the win, the Mountaineers ensure a winning season for a third straight season.
"We couldn't be more proud of the team tonight,"
Jack Maddocks said. "All season, we've battled adversity, and the guys fought tonight to get this win."
After the Ragin' Cajuns won the first two singles matches to take a 2-1 lead, the top three courts for the Mountaineers claimed the three contests for the victory.
With the match tied 2-2,
Milo Bargeron bounced back from a second-set loss to Nico Sojka, which would force a match-deciding third set. From there, the sophomore came away with a timely 6-3 win to put App ahead, 3-2.
Just moments later on Court No. 3,
Ben Webster was up 5-4 and clinched the victory for App on the next game against Arthur Libaud. The freshman was clutch in the big stage in his first Sun Belt Tournament match, as he needed to come back from a one-set deficit to force a third frame.
Scott Webster started the comeback when he dealt Elio Lago a hard-earned 6-3, 6-4 victory to tie up the contests.
Webster had a big day where he and Bargeron clinched doubles over Lago/Vlad Kramarov, 6-2, to hand App a 1-0 advantage.
Webster and
Alex Pavkovich gave the Black and Gold an early edge when it cruised to a 6-1 triumph over Pearce Dolan/Pierce Giheany.
