MORGANTON, N.C. – Appalachian State junior golfer
Joliana Elias finished 2-over-par to pace the Mountaineers at the two-round Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate, which ended Monday.
Elias carded a 74 in Sunday's first round and an even-par 72 on Monday to finish at 2-over 146, good for sixth place out of the 90-person field. She led App State to an eighth-place team finish with a two-day score of 611 (313-298). After a difficult first round, the Mountaineers' 298 team score on Monday was tied for lowest of the day with Troy and USC Upstate.
"It was nice to finish our last regular-season round on a positive note," App State head coach
Heather Brown said. "We tied for the low round of the day, so we will try to build on that confidence heading into the conference championship."
Troy captured the team title with a 19-over 595 (297-298), while Elon's Aurelia Hamm was the low medalist after firing rounds of 73 and 67 to finish 4-under.
Joining Elias in the top 20 was App State sophomore
Melany Chong, who fired a 6-over 150 (77-73) and tied for 15th place. Senior
Annika Winebarger tied for 44th (81-75-156), and junior
Patricia Thompson tied for 56th (81-78-159).
App State has two weeks to prepare for the April 15-17 Sun Belt Championship, which will be held in Sandestin, Fla. Brown's team tied for third place at last year's event.
