BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis (10-9) will travel to Johnson City, Tenn., for its final regular season match at ETSU on Saturday. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
Appalachian started the season 10-5, winning six out of seven matches from Feb. 10 to March 20. The Mountaineers dropped a pair of matches over the weekend to Sun Belt opponents in Troy and Georgia Southern.
App secured the doubles point against Georgia Southern on Sunday before losing the match 4-2. Freshman
Teodora Sevo won her match in straight-sets 6-3, 6-3.
With a 34-16 (.680) record, strong doubles play has led the Mountaineers this season. The pairing of
Melissa Machado and
Teodora Sevo lead the team with a 13-4 record, while
María José Zacarias and
Heidi Swope boast a solid 11-5 mark. The top two tandems are a stellar 24-9 this season.
In singles, Appalachian is 57-50. Sevo and Machado both have over ten victories with 11-6 and 10-6 records, respectively.
Taylor Bygrave, Zacarias and
Rebecca Morse all have nin wins and will go for 10 victories for the first time in their careers.
Scouting ETSU
East Tennessee State is 10-10 this season, winning six of its last seven matches. The Buccaneers are 5-2 in Southern Conference play with a 6-1 victory over UNC Greensboro. Appalachian defeated the Spartans 5-2 on March 20. ETSU is 62-52 in singles with Alory Pereira leading the team with a 14-3 record. In doubles, the Buccaneers are 31-25. Two pairings – Ioanna Markesini and Alory Pereira and Yi Chi Ma and Melissa Esguerra – have ten doubles victories each.
App State will return to action next week in the Sun Belt Tournament held in Peachtree City, Ga.
