BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University (10-9) fell to Winthrop (8-6) on Sunday afternoon in a heartbreaking 4-3 decision at Varsity Courts.
App State showcased a valiant effort as it was trailing 3-1 in the midst of singles play before winning two straight contests to tie it up, 3-3. However, Winthrop claimed the last affair to pick up the win.
The Mountaineers earned the doubles point with two victories by their top two tandems.

Alex Pavkovich downed Connor Williamson/Aditya Gokahle via 6-4 win to improve to 12-5 on the season. Clinching for the Black and Gold was
Scott Webster and
Milo Bargeron, who topped their counterparts, 6-4 to also earn their 12th win of the campaign.
However, the Eagles would win the first three of the finished matches to take a 3-1 lead.
Blake Carter fell to Gokhale in straight sets before Bargeron was defeated by Tremayne Mitchell, 6-3, 6-1.
Winthrop went up by two points when Pavkovich was downed by Williamson, 6-2, 6-2.
Bringing the Black and Gold back were the Webster brothers, with Ben registering a 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) win over L. Pappayiannis for his 10th win of the season.
Scott netted his 13th win of the campaign over Diego Quiroz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. The senior for Australia is one win away from matching last season's win total.
Coming down to the final match on Court 6,
Alex Brea fought valiantly in the contest despite the setback. Brea took his opponent to a tiebreaking first set, 7-6 (7-5) and was dealt a 6-3 defeat in the second frame.
App State looks to rebound next Friday, April 6 against Campbell at home. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at Varsity Courts if the weather holds up. The Mountaineers will honor Scott and
Alexander Free for Senior Day.
