BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (10-7) aims to bounce back this weekend when it plays two matches in as many days. App will face archrival Georgia Southern (11-10) on Saturday at the Wallis Tennis Center in Statesboro, Ga. at 11 a.m. before hosting Winthrop (7-6) on Sunday 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers will host the Eagles at Varsity Courts if the weather holds up.
App State is coming off a 6-1 setback to UNCG on Tuesday, where the Spartans captured the doubles point and five of six singles matches. App was involved in some close matches, as three went to a third set and three of the four frames in a pair of straight-set affairs ended in a tiebreaking finish.
Milo Bargeron was the lone Mountaineer to capture a point for the Black and Gold, pushing his record to .500 at 8-8 in singles action.
Saturday's match is the first of two Sun Belt contests this season with the Coastal Carolina match taking place on April 15. The Mountaineers went 0-2 last season in Sun Belt action.
Scott Webster leads the team with an 11-4 mark in singles action, while
Ben Webster and
Alex Pavkovich are both 9-7 and seek to earn a 10th win.
Blake Carter is 6-5 while
Campbell Stone has five victories to round out the leaders. Appalachian is 53-43 (.552) in singles.
Bargeron and Scott are 10-4 while Pavkovich and Ben improved to 10-5 after a 6-4 triumph on Tuesday. The top two tandems for App are now 20-9, leading the Black and Gold to a 26-18 (.591) doubles mark.
Scouting Georgia Southern
Georgia Southern has fallen in its last two matches to East Carolina and Troy in a pair of 4-1 losses. The Eagles are 5-2 at home this season while they are 1-1 against Sun Belt foes.
Scouting Winthrop
The Eagles are on a three-match win streak with wins over Longwood, Coastal Carolina and most recently, Campbell. Winthrop has struggled on the road with a 3-5 mark including neutral-site matches. Tremayne Mitchell is a team-best 7-3 in singles play, while Diego Quiroz is 5-5 to round out the leaders. Joshua Ryan and Gabriel Dias are undefeated with a 5-0 mark in doubles action, leading four different tandems with multiple wins.
App State will return to action on Friday against Campbell at 2 p.m. for Senior Day, where the Mountaineers will honor Scott and Alex Free.
